The Danger of Success

by Alex T

The problem of success is that it can go to your head.

Often when we reach a goal like losing twenty pounds in two months or getting a promotion at work or doubling our money on a short term investment we immediately deem it a success.

It’s here, at this point, we face the danger of success.

Because as we look back and see how far we’ve come or how much we’ve gained, we can become so filled with self admiration that we begin to believe that we can accomplish just about anything.

Suddenly the mind becomes overly ambitious, brimming with all sorts of ideas of how, for instance, we can lose even more weight or take on more responsibility to show we are ready for the next step up the cooperate ladder or feeling lucky, invest that money we doubled on a longshot.

It all looks possible until our plans backfire. Then it becomes abundantly clear that not only have we strayed from the original plan but spread ourselves thin.

Stressed instead of invigorated, our failed dreams leave such a bad taste in our minds that we decide to abandon them altogether.

Once we have any kind of success, according to the wise, we should proceed with caution and remember the saying ‘Don’t fix what’s not broken’.

Reaching a much desired goal is an accomplishment which can be overwhelming as much for the experienced as it is for the inexperienced. It can create an arrogance which can fill us with unrealistic expectations.

The best way forward is to stay the course, stick to what made us successful in the first place and then wait and let nature take it course.
